This trimester journalism has plenty of new writers, two of which are Cassie Torres and Taylor Drake.

Junior Cassie Torres is looking forward to prom because other students said it was “fun and exciting.” She said this trimester she is taking Child Development because she likes children. I asked if she has any previous experience with children, and she said she has five brothers and sisters. She likes to be the role model to the children. She also helps her cousin’s Special Needs son. When she becomes an adult, she says that she would like to work as a nurse at Riley Hospital. She does babysit in some of her spare time.
In her spare time she also writes stories. She said she heard that this class is difficult. When she was asked what she likes to write about, she said she likes to write stories about sports. She also likes to play softball. When asked, she said she would like to write about sports in the newspaper.

Freshman Taylor Drake said that in the previous year she took Yearbook at another school. She also mentioned she has done other writing styles, but she has never written articles. In her free time she tends to babysit and gets involved with her church a lot. When asked “Why Journalism?”, she answered that the counselor had heard that she did Yearbook at her previous school and had recommended Journalism to her. During her time in Yearbook, she learned to use a camera. This year she decided to take an online course called Musical History, which is considered a fine art. Also at her previous school she took Spanish so this year she is going to take French.
When asked what her favorite movie is, she replied, “The Perks of Being a Wallflower.” Then she was asked why this is her favorite movie, and she said the actors were good and so was the storyline. When asked what she liked about Plymouth High School so far, she said, “Teachers were nice.”

Senior Leon Olszewski, a fifteen year old foreign exchange student from Austria, is a first time journalism student.
Olszewski was born in Austria on August 11, 1999. Olszewski has two brothers, 13 and four years old. Coming to the U.S., Olszewski was most nervous about meeting his host family. Olszewski says that although Austria and America are similar, there are a few differences. According to Olszewski, some of the differences between his native country and the U.S. are the amount of cars, fast food, and the distance between sites in the U.S. Olszewski says that most of his hobbies include sports of the running nature, such as soccer and volleyball. One of his favorite foods is pizza, though he is not used to the unhealthy food America has to offer. Olszewski is part of the soccer team for the 2014 season. While in America, Olszewski says he would like to take a trip to a stadium. Academically, Olszewski says his favorite subject is Geography. Olszewski is fluent in German, his native language, Polish due to his father, and English. He has also studied French for three years and Latin for one year. One of the things Olszewski said he enjoyed most about PHS is the ability to select classes and the concept of using laptops. Olszewski said he wanted to take Journalism to “improve his English” and gain experience with the class before he returns home in June.
