On students’ free time, they can go see a movie for entertainment, but this does not mean they will not learn something from the experience.
Some people have a favorite genre of movies, but their favorite movie may not be classified in that genre. For an example, someone could love watching horror movies, but his or her favorite movie could be “Slumdog Millionaire”; which is about a guy playing a game show, but not for the money; he plays hoping his true love will notice and come to him. Sophomore Emily Eveland’s favorite category is comedy, “I love to laugh so it just makes sense that it is,” yet she said her favorite movie is “Grease,” which has been ever since she was young. “It’s a classic,” Eveland also said, “My mom used to watch [“Grease”] all the time with me and taught me the songs.” Sophomore Morgan Hite’s favorite movie category is horror, “I love to be scared,” she said; but her favorite movie is “Jurassic Park,” which could be classified in a few ways; action, thriller or maybe horror if dinosaurs terrify a person. Hite said that she has always liked “Jurassic Park.” “I have been watching that movie since I was young and it has always had a place on my shelf.”
Other people’s favorite movie actually might be classified as their favorite genre. Sophomore Jessica Beagle likes comedy and romance movies and her favorite movie is “The Vow,” “because it is so sweet.” For about six months, freshman Adam Chambers’s favorite movie was “The Collector,” which goes along with his favorite genre, horror. He said, “It is fun to see what someone’s imagination can create. [In “The Collector”] there is a lot of blood and gore and it is kind of messed up.” Sophomore Nicklaus Bayley’s favorite genre of movie is comedy, which goes along with his favorite movie; “The Hangover.” Senior Grace Mestad agrees with Bayley, with her favorite movie also being “The Hangover,” ever since it came out, “It’s so funny and it’s just one of those movies I can watch a million times and never get sick of.” For Mestad’s favorite genre of movie, she said, “It kind of just depends what I’m in the mood to watch. I love anything as long as it’s not horror movies.”
Nowadays, movies are being more and more 3-D, but some people may be against that or pro 3-D. Mestad said, “I think 3-D movies are all right.” Some of them are pretty cool, but others I just don’t even understand why they’re 3-D.” Eveland, on the other hand, said, “They’re cool, but only occasionally. It worked for “Avatar,” but some movies should definitely not be 3-D. I personally think they overdid it.” Chambers disagrees and agrees with Mestad and Eveland, he said, I am not a fan of 3D movies because it gives me a headache and I frequently take off my glasses. No, I prefer to go see a regular movie.”
As said before, students may have their own favorite genre of movies, but their favorite movie seems to always be what is most meaningful to them. Mestad said the most meaningful movie to her would be “The Blind Side”; “It just kind of has a little bit of everything in it and it definitely touches the heart.” Eveland thinks that meaningful movies are “movies that can get me to cry or make me feel a certain way at the end. That means the movie did their job to get me to really care about what the movie was about.” Chambers on the other hand, thinks that “Click” is a meaningful movie “because you shouldn’t take what you have for granted and you should enjoy every minute of your life because life is too short.” Hite believes that the new movie, “The Lorax” is a meaningful movie, “It teaches kids about trees and the environment; and also it is a cute movie.”
A great movie can be classified in many ways, since people have a variety of interests ranging from comedy to romance or action to horror.
Great article. I can’t wait to read more of them. Keep up the great work.
