Starting November 1st, or even before, teachers and students at PHS and around the globe will participate in Noshember, which is short for No Shave November. Noshember is meant to raise cancer awareness and funds to support cancer prevention, research and education. People that participate may not really know the reason for participating. Senior Jordan Bowering said, “No Shave November is a month that nobody is supposed to shave, except women of course, and wait until the end of the month to shave.” This is kind of what Noshember is, but it is also not the whole definition.
Then there are people who cannot participate because they are in sports. Coach Bales said, “I have a philosophy – no shave = no play!” Coach Bales requires that the boys on the basketball team must be clean-shaven during the basketball season and games. Since they are not allowed to do Noshember, Mr. Bales does not participate in it either to make it fair for the players.
Noshember is not only a time to help raise cancer awareness and funds to support cancer prevention, but to also have fun with growing facial hair.
There are girls at PHS that do not participate for almost the same reasons. Freshman Kate Renneker said that she does not participate in Noshember because, “It’s gross.” Girls that participate in Noshember tend not to shave their armpits, legs and other places that might be visible to the human eye when walking around places. Sophomore Hope Carter said, “Yeah, because it’s fun as well as it gives you something to talk about, and it helps raise awareness for all of that.” This is a girl who will walk around school and public places without shaving her legs or her armpits because she thinks it is fun.
