By Cassie Torres: A new security system is in place at Plymouth High School. Some students feel safe and some do not.
Over the summer Plymouth High School invested in new security. PHS installed new cameras in the school. There are also new security monitors; one is Misty Andrizejewski.
Officer Ted Brown is also visible at the high school. Some students in PHS feel safe and some do not. Junior Maeson Coffin said he feels like “he is in prison cause anything can happen at anytime with or without cameras.”
“Freshman Kiegan Willis said yes he does feel safe in the school with more cameras in our school. Freshman Alondra Sanchez agrees with Willis. She said, “Yes because now we just feel safer in school and we are sure that there won’t be any random guy here.

As a person enters into the school, he/she is required to push the button, and identify himself/herself. If it is a student not recognized, Mrs. Schuler welcomes them and asks who they are. If it is an adult, she welcomes him/her and asks who they need to see and what they are here for. Photo by: Brittine Martin
Since PHS has new security there are a number of students who feel safe. “ Sanchez said, “You just have to be yourself and if you do bad things that’s why they get everything on camera and get your attention so they can correct your errors.” Freshman Rose Miller said, “I do not. I’m not really bothered by them unless I can see them and then they just make me feel paranoid. I think that they will definitely help control student behavior.” Freshman Jewel Brown said, “No. I’ve never felt safe in school. I think that kids will hurt other kids and absolutely nothing stops them. Nobody looks like a homicidal person so I have trouble not being anxious around new people.” As the result of having new security in the school, some of the students feel safe.
On the other hand, Freshman William Johnston said, “Depends on how you define safe… Cameras aren’t necessarily going to help against someone who has brought weapons or drugs into the school, because if one wants to hide weapons/drugs, they will get past the cameras.” Sophomore Breanna Gilmore quoted, “Yes because if there is someone that comes in the school with a gun or something I know that the teachers will keep all of the students safe and get rid of the guy that has the weapon.” There are different feelings about PHS new security.
