In their efforts to help the community, the Operation Leadership team of PHS proves that even at a young age, they too can make a difference in their efforts to collect funds to support United Way.

“I hope students see how important it is to raise money to help others, to work together as a team”, states Mrs. Scheetz. PHS guidance counselor Mrs. Scheetz is one of the several faculty members assisting the Operation Leadership group ( a select number of students being educated in fundamental leadership skills) in their hopes to raise funds and give back to the community. Scheetz was more than happy to help commenting, “I enjoy raising money for a great fund. I also love working with the students in helping come up with ideas.”The students were divided into three sections, with each section devoted to a specific cause. One such was United Way.

To start, students first brainstormed thoughts as to how they would raise the money. After a bit of planning they were able to narrow down their ideas and settle on a finalized plan. They decided on hosting a whole week of scheduled events dedicated to collecting funds for United Way. They first held a raffle contest with prizes including numerous gift baskets donated by each academic department. Themes for baskets included “Science Experiment,” “Date Night,” “Prom Night” and “Curling Up on a Cozy Night” with tickets costing 25 cents apiece. The community was also actively involved in a competition at the Plymouth versus Triton basketball game, in which they were encouraged to donate money to see which team could raise the most. In addition, white “Live United” shirts were sold and worn throughout the week to signify the theme.

“[Compared to last year], there are more options for the students to choose to help out,” says sophomore Gabe Vervynckt. “Also many are more aware of the event this year because of the work that was done last year”, he adds. Evidently, not only were students benefiting a great cause, but were also learning the positive roles of volunteering and giving back to the community. “I hope they [students] understand the importance of helping others by being a part of this event”, he states.

Yes, these times have presented many with hardships, in terms of the current rough economy. Yet with their dedication and optimistic attitudes, this team was able to collect about 980 dollars, all of which would be donated to United Way. In conclusion, Mrs. Scheetz comments, “I am very pleased we raised as much as we did.
