The 2015-2016 school year is coming fast, and with it comes a number of changes at Plymouth High School. Students have mixed feelings about the changed schedule.
The school year remains 180 days, as it has been for years. However, the instructional window will be considerably longer than it has been in the past. Unofficially, Fall Break will be seven days, Thanksgiving Break will be three days, Christmas Break will be 14 days, Spring Break will be 14 days, and there will be five “teacher work days.” Spring Break is considerably longer than it has been, but the remainder of the vacations will be comparable to years past.
In addition to the longer school year, PHS is implementing what seems like a longer school day. The school day will contain one more class period. This has led a number of students to believe that the school day must be longer, which is not the case. School will continue to start and stop at 7:55 a.m. and 3:15 p.m., respectively.
Students have different opinions concerning the shortened summer break and other calendar changes. Freshman Ben Nixon said, “I think that the students will be upset with them [calendar changes] at first because they still want a long summer, but they will like the longer break periods. The staff won’t care as much as the students but they will have to get used to it.” Freshman James Rains said, “Everyone will have to adjust to this, and quite frankly it will be a pain.”
Students look forward to next year because of things like sports, graduation, and two week vacations. Junior Tyler Meece doesn’t care that summer vacation is being shortened. He says “most of the stuff we do is on the weekends anyway.” The only thing he looks forward to about next school year is graduation. That is one thing freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors should look forward to in the years to come.
