By: Jon Sommers Over the decades making books into movies has become popular. The Hunger Games, The Fault in Our Stars, Divergent and The Lord of the Rings trilogy are books that were eventually turned into movies.
Divergent is a movie that came out on March 21, 2014. Junior Amber Gonzalez said, “My favorite book to was Divergent it was my favorite because there wasn’t much cut out from the book or wasn’t much that I thought they should have included in the movie.” Gonzalez also stated that her favorite characters were “the two main characters that they follow through this book, Tris and Four. I think were depicted okay in the movie. There are a couple of characteristics in the book that are kind of hard to pick up on in the movie.” Sophomore Josh Pranger responded, “Divergent, because the book was incredible and the movie followed the details really well.”
The first The Lord of The Rings movie was released on December 19, 2014. Senior Matt Feece stated that his favorite “book to movie” is “The Hobbit or The Lord of The Rings. Peter Jackson realized that the only thing that the book can’t provide you with is visuals. He took full advantage of this in every Tolkien book he adapted to a movie. The movies were literally beautiful.” Feece also said, “Young Bilbo Baggins was done wonderfully by both Peter Jackson and Martin Freeman. Gave him a sense of humor without giving him dialogue that would be out of character. However, Lord of The Rings made funnier characters out of Legolas, Gimli, Pippin, Sam, and Merry in a way that took away from their depth of character depicted in the book. Admittedly, I like the movie Legolas and Gimli better.”

The Hunger Games was released on March 23, 2012. Freshman Mackenzie Barnhart stated, “I like the theme of it.” Barnhart went on to say that her favorite character was “Prim because she was a great inspiration to make Katniss want to survive the Hunger Games.” Barnhart’s favorite quote from The Hunger Games was “‘May the odds be ever in your favor’ -Effie Trinket.”
A handful of people who watched The Hunger Games did not like it as much as Barnhart did. Freshman Jewel Brown said, “I feel like The Hunger Games wasn’t true to the book at all. Katniss was supposed to be like deaf and Peeta was supposed to lose a leg but that didn’t happen. I know that’s not major but it happens in real life so it would make sense for it to happen there. I’m not sure why they changed it. If anything, it would have empowered people that are amputees and deaf.” Gonzalez also mentioned, “The Hunger Games, was because they got rid of a character, cut scenes short, or completely changed some scenes.”
Over the past ten to twenty years making books into movies has become much more popular than before. The Hunger Games, The Fault in our Stars, Divergent and The Lord of the Rings trilogy are all books that eventually have been turned into movies.
