Students at Plymouth High School have different music tastes than their parents/guardians.

There are many different types of music students may listen to. Sophomore Elise Patrick enjoys listening to bands/artists such as “Kodaline, The 1975, Sam Smith, One Direction, Ed Sheeran, Disclosure, Arctic Monkeys, The Beatles and Lorde.” Patrick said she enjoys listening to these artists and bands because “I like listening to a broad range of musicians, generally because I have someone to listen to for whatever mood I am in.” Although Patrick’s music taste tends to be pop or alternative rock, her parents tend to have a bit of a different music taste. “My parents would typically listen to music like Dave Matthews Band, Zac Brown Band, and Jack Johnson because it is music that calms them down, just due to their hectic schedules.”

Freshman Jon Sommers enjoys various kinds of music. “I personally listen to all kinds of music from classical music such as Mozart and Bach to Hard Rock such as Blessed by a Broken Heart. Sometimes I like to listen to SKA music like the O.C Supertones, but some music I will not stand for is mainstream pop or mainstream rap,” said Sommers. “I choose to listen to them because they help me get through everyday tasks. Some songs I listen to just help improve my overall mood. The song Iris by “The Goo Goo Dolls” just makes me happy any time I listen to it.” Some parents share very different music tastes and that applies with Sommers and his parents as well. “My parents choose to listen to music such as The Newsboys and David Crowder Band, which are both Christian artists. I believe that they like to listen to them because it improves their overall mood for that day.”

Sophomore Cristian Jimenez’s parents listen to something a little different than that of other parents. “They’re always listening to Spanish music!” said Jimenez. “When they get home from work, the first thing they do is put on some of their music. I guess it helps soothe them after a long day, plus it’s the only music they understand,” said Jimenez. “I like it because I understand it, I just like my music more. I listen to music like Drake, Tyga, Odd Future, Pierce the Veil, Earl Sweatshirt, and Frank Ocean.”

Parents are not the only ones who have different music tastes. Sophomore Jake Davis also likes music that is not considered a typical teen’s music. “My Chemical Romance, Blink 182, Panic at the Disco, and The Spectators are my favorite bands. I just really like their music,” said Davis. “My parents would typically listen to some country music which is really weird considering I don’t really like country music. Sometimes we agree on the music, though, when I have no choice and they get to pick what they want to listen to. Some of their music isn’t terrible,” said Davis.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-9323" class="size-medium wp-image-9323" alt="Sophomore Jake Dewar likes most of his parents' music. "I like my parents’ taste in music because it’s old school and it’s always good to bring back the old stuff to kinda reminisce," said Dewar. Photo by: Elizabeth Jackson

Agreeing with his parents music taste is not only Davis, but Sophomore Jake Dewar. “I really like The Weeknd and Rebelution and that’s kinda funny because my mom will listen to The Weeknd with me and my dad really likes Rebelution. Usually I listen to bands like Machine Gun Kelly, Blue Oyster Cult, Aerosmith, Kid Ink or Wiz Khalifa because they’re good and I really like how their music sounds. Normally my parents will listen to music like Bruno Mars, my mom’s a big fan, they also really like Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen and Enrique Iglesias, again that one’s my mom. I like my parents’ taste in music because it’s old school and it’s always good to bring back the old stuff to kinda reminisce. Ya know?” said Dewar.

Students have different music tastes than their parents, but all students must learn that it is not the music that matters, as long as people have those they love, everything will be OK.

By Elizabeth Jackson As the generations pass, music evolves from previous generations.
