By Guadalupe Ortiz

Beach towels, sun block, cool waves, and being stress free is what summer is all about. But for some Plymouth high school students the summer was filled with work, sports, and other activities leaving them with little time for summer fun.

Some students already had their summer planned out before it had even started. But that does not mean it happened the way they wanted it to. Sophomore Cassi Quissell says, “My original plans were to have fun and relax, but that didn’t happen. Because I was at the high school all summer.” Quissell spent most of her summer at PHS busy with volleyball and gymnastics.

While some were involved with sports, others were earning cash with their summer jobs. Senior Clay Corsbie comments, “In the beginning of summer I guess I kind of had higher expectations. I also hadn’t planned on getting a summer job so that was a little disappointing.”
Corsbie worked at Pioneer detasseling corn in a field where he says, “could be found in the middle of nowhere in Knox.”

School also seemed to have kept students back from relaxing. Senior Braxton Moore replied, “ I didn’t enjoy it [summer vacation] because I was stuck in summer school taking Government and Economics.” In addition to summer classes, like Corsbie, Moore also had a summer job working at UPS.

However, not all students were stuck with jobs, school, or sports. Sophomore Andrew Gerard commented, “I went on a family vacation to Washington D.C. and also went with my extended family to Higgins Lake, Michigan. I just had plans to relax and have fun! I believe I accomplished those.” Yet Gerard was not the only student found vacationing. Sophomore Libbie Portteus states, “I enjoyed this summer because I went on a missions trip to the Navajo Nations in Arizona. On my missions trip I went with 14 other people who weren’t my family. Well one was my sister.”

Not all students enjoyed a trip to a faraway place though. Some had regrets that they did not get to travel. Rebecca Lee, a sophomore at PHS, says, “I wish I would have gone somewhere or done more.” Lee regrets not getting out as much as she wanted too.

Others had regrets about getting a summer job. The summer jobs wasted their time, time that they wanted to be filled with summer memories. Corsbie finished off with, “I wish I could change a lot of things! Some things such as not taking a summer job, because that really drained a lot of my summer time.”

Summer is a time to relax, have fun, get out, and finally escape the textbooks (in this case MacBooks) and sitting at desks for eight hours at a time. However, when students commit to summer courses, jobs, or sports summer may seem more like a chore than a time to relax.

By Guadalupe Ortiz Beach towels, sun block, cool waves, and being stress free is what summer is all about.
