{"id":26,"date":"2010-10-29T15:48:18","date_gmt":"2010-10-29T15:48:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/social.plymouth.k12.in.us\/perspective\/?p=26"},"modified":"2014-04-07T07:16:56","modified_gmt":"2014-04-07T12:16:56","slug":"phs-cheerleaders-shine-with-school-spirit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/social.plymouth.k12.in.us\/perspective\/?p=26","title":{"rendered":"PHS Cheerleaders Shine with School Spirit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Anyssa Alonso<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_203\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><em><em><a href=\"http:\/\/social.plymouth.k12.in.us\/perspective\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/ld.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-203\" class=\"size-full wp-image-203\" title=\"ld\" src=\"http:\/\/social.plymouth.k12.in.us\/perspective\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/ld.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"345\" \/><\/a><\/em><\/em><p id=\"caption-attachment-203\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cheerleaders express their joy for the win of the football game. <br \/> Photo By: Lindsey Downs<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201c&#8230;the night gets dark and the lights come up, the thrill of the crowd and cheering is the best,\u201d says first year cheerleader Senior Sarah Gouker.\u00a0 The cheerleading squad is one of the many prides at PHS and is never short of school spirit.\u00a0 Sporting school colors and bright smiles, PHS cheerleaders know how to get the crowd pumped for another Plymouth victory.<br \/>\n<!--more--> Cheerleaders may not have to perform to win, but their positive attitudes and encouraging cheers remind football and boys basketball players that they stand proudly behind their home team.\u00a0 Cheering gets the crowd excited and more personally involved with the team.\u00a0 A lot of work goes into creating and performing the routines seen during the game.\u00a0 \u201cOur practices are physically challenging,\u201d says former PHS cheerleader and head Coach Krysta Magee.\u00a0 \u201cSome weeks we may\u00a0 have three to four games or events we have to attend and practice on top of that.\u201d\u00a0 Practices are usually twice a week and include: warm-ups and running, practice of chants and cheers, building and stunts, and practice and creation of dances.<br \/>\n\u201cI feel that when we build, we are working as hard as a lot of other sports,\u201d says Junior cheerleader Kendall Cooper\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s a lot of work because you have to have tight motions and it\u2019s work lifting up.\u00a0 I really think [everyone doesn\u2019t] know how much we do,\u201d says Sophomore cheerleader Allie Berger.\u00a0 Cheering requires strength and flexibility- abilities that are achieved over time with much practice.\u00a0 Some people do not view cheerleading as a real sport,\u00a0 but all the work that goes into practices says otherwise.\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cI feel that cheerleaders work just as hard as other sports,\u201d states Coach Magee.\u00a0 Despite the negative feelings of some, PHS cheerleaders continue to keep their heads held high as well as the spirits of the crowd.<br \/>\n\u201c[My favorite thing about Cheerleading is] building.\u00a0 I really love flying and being in the air.\u00a0 And the student section.\u00a0 It\u2019s so fun,\u201d says Berger.\u00a0 Some other reasons to join cheerleading from PHS\u2019s own: \u201cIt\u2019s fun..Seniors typically get to design [the] team shirt and our underclassmen usually do something special for them during homecoming week,\u201d says Coach Magee.\u00a0 \u201cI love to have spirit and smile all the time so I figured cheerleading was for me.\u00a0 I hope I encourage everyone.\u201d adds Gouker.\u00a0 \u201cI always thought [cheerleading] looked fun.
