Almost every year, new members are inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame and get to go down in history beside many Plymouth alumnus on the walls by the gym. \u00a0This year is no exception.<\/p>\n

The Athletic Hall of Fame is a prestigious place for athletes of the past and present to finish their high school careers.\u00a0 Assistant Athletic Director John Scott said, \u201cThe Athletic Hall of Fame started in 1985.\u201d \u00a0Students, coaches, and administrators can all qualify. \u00a0Inductees on the wall range from former boys basketball coach Jack Edison, who won two state titles in his coaching career, to runner Morgan Uceny, who set PHS school records and is now running professionally.<\/p>\n

To qualify, a student athlete must \u201cmake the All Star Team, make 1st Team All-State, or place in a state meet.\u201d said Mr. Scott. \u00a0The individual may also qualify by winning \u201cthe Mental Attitude Award in a state tournament.\u201d<\/p>\n

Coaches and administrators have to have 15 years of service at Plymouth, coached an Indiana All-Star team, or coached a state championship team.<\/p>\n

This year, three seniors have currently qualified. \u00a0Damon Howe qualified for wrestling, Kenzie Miller qualified in swimming, and Kody Newman qualified for being the North All-Star team manager.<\/p>\n

Howe qualified as both a junior and a senior. \u00a0\u201c[I qualified by making the] All-State football team, and North-South All-State,\u201d he said. \u00a0\u201c[For wrestling, I placed] 5th at state [my junior year] and was runner up this year.\u201d \u00a0Miller \u201cmade it to state [in swimming] all four years, broke all the school records, and broke multiple records in other pools.\u201d Girls\u2019 swim coach Leanne Senter called Miller \u201cprobably the most successful swimmer here at PHS.\u201d<\/p>\n

The number of inductees \u201cvaries from year to year, depending on how many athletes qualify and meet the requirements.\u201d said Mr. Scott. Many past and present inductees go on to compete at the college level. \u00a0Howe will be \u201cplaying football at the University of Findlay,\u201d a Division II school. \u00a0Miller also plans to continue her swimming career at Texas Christian University, a Division I school.<\/p>\n

Making the Athletic Hall of Fame is quite an honor, one that few athletes can accomplish in their high school career. \u201cIt feels great to be on the wall with all the great athletes up there,\u201d said Howe. \u00a0\u201cI feel very honored,\u201d said Miller. \u201cI am the first female swimmer to be on the wall.\u201d At the senior awards ceremony held on Friday, many recognized the athletes. \u00a0\u201cForever these students will be on the wall to be recognized by future students,\u201d said Principal Jim Condon.<\/p>\n

The Hall of Fame is a representation of all of the hard work athletes put into their sport. \u00a0Athletics can teach many values. \u00a0\u201cI\u2019m all about teamwork and have learned great coping skills [in my sports].\u201d said Howe.<\/p>\n

Benefits of making the Hall of Fame include \u201c[having a] picture on the wall, and having a nice entry on [your] resume.\u201d said Mr. Scott.<\/p>\n

This honor given out every year gives all athletes a chance, but only the dedicated make the wall. \u201cSwimming is my life, and that\u2019s the only way of life I know.\u201d said Miller. \u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s made me a competitive, motivated, and dedicated person. \u00a0I\u2019ve learned that even if you fail once, never give up on your dream.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
